Understanding the Formation of Free Gas in Solvent Extraction Plants

During normal operation of solvent extraction plants, atmospheric air enters the system alongside raw materials through conveyors, rotary valves, and extractor feed ports. This air flows through the leaching equipment, mixing with solvent vapors generated in the extractors, desolventizing ovens, separators, and storage tanks.

Since this air-solvent mixture cannot fully condense under standard cooling conditions, it is termed free gas, also known as non-condensable gas. Without proper control, free gas accumulates within the enclosed oil mill plant system.

The tail gas recovery system is designed to efficiently recover solvent vapors from the free gas within the solvent extraction unit. It reduces solvent loss, enhances plant safety, and ensures modern oil mills comply with environmental regulations.

Key Working Principles of a Tail Gas Recovery System

1. Centralized Gas Collection

Free gas from critical equipment—including solvent extractors, oil-water separators, blending tanks, main condensers, solvent working tanks, and auxiliary vessels—is collected and transported to a centralized air balance tank. This ensures stable pressure control throughout the oil mill plant.

2. Final Condensation Stage

Collected gases pass through a high-efficiency final condenser, where most solvent vapors condense into liquid and return to the solvent circulation system.

3. Tail Gas Absorption

Despite condensation, residual solvents remain in the tail gas. These gases are directed into a mineral oil absorption tower or equivalent solvent recovery unit. Mineral oil efficiently and selectively absorbs the remaining solvent vapors.

4. Stripping and Solvent Recovery

The solvent-rich mineral oil is transported to a stripping tower. Through controlled heating, the absorbed solvents are desorbed, condensed, and fully recovered back into the solvent extraction process.

5. Clean, Compliant Emissions

After stripping, the residual gas contains only trace amounts of solvent, well below regulatory limits, and can be safely released into the atmosphere.
