With the continuous expansion of global soybean cultivation, the production of soybeans and soybean oil has been steadily increasing. Soybean oil is widely praised for its high unsaturated fat content, neutral flavor, and non-stick properties, making it the preferred choice in the edible oil industry. However, soybeans have an oil content of only 18% to 20%, and solvent extraction is typically used to extract the oil. The resulting crude oil must undergo a rigorous soybean oil refining process before it is safe and appealing for human consumption.
Why Is Soybean Oil Refining Necessary?
Crude soybean oil contains impurities such as phospholipids, free fatty acids (FFAs), pigments, trace metals, and volatile compounds. These impurities can affect the oil’s taste, shelf life, and safety. A well-designed soybean oil refining machine removes these impurities through a series of physical and chemical processes, producing high-quality refined oil suitable for cooking, frying, and industrial food processing.
Five Key Steps in the Soybean Oil Refining Process
A complete continuous soybean refining production line typically includes the following core steps:
1. Degumming
Hot water or food-grade phosphoric acid is added to crude oil to hydrate and coagulate hydratable and non-hydratable phospholipids. These gums are then separated using centrifugal separators. This step prevents darkening and oil degradation during subsequent refining.
2. Neutralization (Alkali Refining)
A food-grade alkali solution is added to neutralize free fatty acids, forming soapstocks. These are removed by high-speed centrifuges. Alkali refining also reduces trace metals and residual gums. This is a critical step for improving oil stability and reducing off-flavors.
3. Bleaching
Activated bleaching earth is mixed with the oil under vacuum and high temperature (90–120°C) to adsorb pigments, residual soaps, trace metals, and oxidation products. The spent earth is then filtered out, yielding clear, light-colored oil.
4. Deodorization
Conducted under high vacuum (2–5 mbar) and high temperature (230–260°C), direct steam injection strips volatile odor compounds, FFAs, and pesticide residues. Modern physical refining combines deacidification and deodorization in one stage, reducing chemical consumption and waste.
5. Winterization / Dewaxing (optional)
The oil is chilled to precipitate waxes and high-melting-point triglycerides, then filtered. This improves cold stability and clarity for salad oils and frying applications in cold climates.
Core Equipment List for a 300 TPD Soybean Oil Refining Plant
Below is a typical equipment configuration for a continuous refining line:
| Process Stage | Main Equipment | Key Functions |
|---|---|---|
| Degumming & Neutralization | Acid mixer, alkali dosing system, centrifugal separators, drying tower | Precise chemical reaction, efficient separation of gums & soapstocks, vacuum drying |
| Bleaching | Vacuum dryer, bleaching earth mixing tank, bleaching reactor, leaf filters | Adsorbent mixing, vacuum adsorption, complete removal of spent earth |
| Deodorization | Deaerator, spiral plate heat exchangers, deodorization tower, fatty acid scrubber | Air removal, heat recovery, steam stripping, FFA recovery |
| Auxiliary Systems | Thermal oil heater, cooling tower, nitrogen generator, air compressor | Heat source, cooling medium, nitrogen blanketing, instrument air |
| Control System | PLC/SCADA central panel, industrial PC | Full automation, real-time monitoring, data logging, safety interlocks |
For a 3,000 TPD plant, equipment sizes are scaled accordingly, with multiple centrifuges, larger heat exchangers, and reinforced structural supports.
Key Process Characteristics and Engineering Considerations
Fully Continuous Automated Operation
PLC or DCS control systems ensure consistent product quality, minimize human error, and support remote monitoring. Continuous operation reduces downtime and maximizes oil yield.
Energy-Efficient Design
The spiral plate heat exchangers in the deodorization section recover up to 85% of thermal energy, reducing total energy consumption by 15% to 20% compared to traditional designs.
Food-Grade Material Safety
All components in contact with oil (pipes, valves, tanks) are manufactured from 304 or 316L stainless steel to prevent contamination and comply with international food safety standards (e.g., FDA, EU, Kosher, Halal).
Low Waste and Environmentally Friendly
The advanced physical refining process requires minimal chemical reagents. Spent bleaching earth can be reprocessed or used as an alternative fuel. Fatty acid distillates are a valuable byproduct.
