Oilseed Softening Machine: Essential Pretreatment for Efficient Oil Extraction

In modern oil mill plants, the softening machine plays a critical role in preparing oilseeds for the flaking process. Softening ensures that oilseeds achieve the ideal texture, moisture content, and temperature, thereby preparing them for subsequent processing and ultimately improving oil yield and oil quality.

Why Do Oil Mills Need Softening?

For oilseeds with low oil content, such as soybeans, as well as rapeseed and cottonseed with low moisture content, softening is a necessary step to meet the requirements for pressing. If softening is improper, hard, dry, and low-temperature oilseeds like soybeans will produce excessive fine powder during pressing, thereby reducing oil extraction efficiency. Similarly, low-moisture rapeseed cannot be successfully flaked without prior softening. For high-oil-content seeds, such as peanuts, softening is generally not required.

Two Main Softening Methods in Oilseed Processing

1. Heating-Hydration Method (Steaming Method)

Suitable for high-oil, soft-textured oilseeds such as sunflower seeds, peanut kernels, and tea seeds. In this method, only heating (with minimal direct steam) is applied. In some cases, these high-oil seeds can be sent directly to the flaking machine without softening.

2. Water-Heat Combined Method

Ideal for low-oil or low-moisture oilseeds like soybeans. This method is also effective for high-oil seeds that are high in fiber or have hard shells, such as flaxseed and rapeseed.

Which Oilseeds Require Softening Before Flaking?

  • Soybeans (most common)
  • Cottonseed kernels
  • Rapeseed (when low moisture)
  • Flaxseed (when hard shell or low moisture)

Typical Softening Conditions for Soybeans

To achieve optimal results in an oil mill plant, the following parameters are recommended for soybean softening:

Note: If soybean moisture is high, dehumidification during heating is necessary. If moisture is low, steam should be introduced to ensure uniform internal and external softening.
