After refining, the oil can be further processed through palm oil fractionation to obtain palm olein (used for cooking oil) and palm stearin (used in margarine, shortening, and industrial products).

Palm Oil Refining Process

The palm oil refining process comprises four key stages: degumming, deacidification, decolorization, and deodorization. These steps can be achieved through chemical refining or physical refining, depending on the characteristics of the crude oil.

1. Degumming and Deacidification

In the first stage, crude palm oil is heated to approximately 80°C and mixed with hot water to hydrate phospholipids, forming a gum that is separated by sedimentation. Neutralization follows, where a mixture of water and caustic soda is added to neutralize free fatty acids (FFA), forming soapstock that is subsequently removed. This combined process ensures removal of gums and free fatty acids, yielding semi-refined palm oil.

2. Decolorization (Bleaching)

Bleaching is a critical step in the palm oil refining process. During this process, the oil is treated with bleaching earth or activated clay to adsorb impurities such as pigments, trace metals, and oxides. The mixture is stirred under controlled temperature and vacuum conditions to maximize adsorption efficiency. The oil is then filtered using industrial filters (e.g., filter presses or sealed blade filters) to remove spent bleaching earth. 3. Deodorization

The deodorization process ensures the final product is odor-free, stable, and visually appealing.

4. Fractionation – Enhancing Palm Oil Value

To maximize the economic value of palm oil, RBD palm oil is further separated into palm olein and palm stearin through a controlled cooling and crystallization process.

• Palm Olein: A transparent liquid oil commonly used for cooking and frying.
