Selecting the optimal edible oil extraction process is the cornerstone of successfully establishing an oil mill plant. The right method directly impacts oil yield, quality, operating costs, and market competitiveness. Currently, the global vegetable oil industry primarily relies on two technologies: mechanical pressing (using oil presses) and solvent extraction. An increasing number of mills are also adopting combined methods to balance efficiency and purity.

This guide will provide an in-depth analysis of the technical details of each method, comparing their principles, applications, and economic feasibility to help you make data-driven decisions.

Pressing vs. Solvent Extraction: Key Differences

1. Mechanical Pressing (Oil Press)

Oil press

Mechanical pressing uses physical force to extract oil from oilseeds. This method is suitable for oilseeds with high oil content (over 30%), such as peanuts, sesame seeds, canola seeds, sunflower seeds, and palm kernels. Mechanical pressing can be further divided into two distinct techniques:

  • Cold Oil Press: Performed at temperatures below 60°C (140°F) without preheating. This helps preserve heat-sensitive nutrients, such as tocopherols (vitamin E), phytosterols, and polyphenols. Cold-pressed oils retain their natural aroma and flavor and command higher prices in the health food market. However, the oil extraction rate is lower (typically 60–70%), and 8–12% of the oil remains in the oilcake.
  • Hot pressing: Before pressing, the oilseeds are pretreated with steam or dry heat (120–150°C). Heating reduces the viscosity of the oil, denatures proteins, and solidifies phospholipids, thereby improving the oil’s flowability and release rate. This method can increase the oil extraction rate to 85–90% and reduce the residual oil content to 5–7%. Heating also imparts a roasted flavor to the oil (e.g., sesame oil), but it may slightly darken the oil’s color and reduce its antioxidant content.

Key Technical Parameters for Pressing:

  • Screw speed: 30–60 RPM for oilseeds to prevent overheating.
  • Cake thickness: 3–5 mm for optimal oil drainage.
  • Pressure range: Up to 300–400 kg/cm².
  • Residual oil in meal: 6–12% (cold), 5–7% (hot).

Advantages: Low capital investment, simple operation, no chemical reagents, and produces “natural” label-friendly oils.
Disadvantages: Lower overall yield, higher power consumption per ton of oil, and limited to seeds with >25% oil content.

2. Solvent extraction

Solvent extraction

Solvent extraction is a chemical process that uses food-grade solvents (such as hexane) to dissolve and separate oils from low-oil-content raw materials like soybeans, rice bran, or cottonseed. This method achieves extraction rates of over 99%, with residual oil content in the meal below 1%.

The process follows the countercurrent percolation principle:

  1. Preparation: Oilseeds are flaked (0.3–0.4 mm thickness) to increase surface area.
  2. Extraction: Solvent percolates through the material bed in a loop extractor or continuous belt system.
  3. Miscella separation: The oil-solvent mixture (miscella) is filtered.
  4. Distillation: Miscella is heated to evaporate and recover the solvent (condensed and recycled), leaving crude oil. The solvent recovery rate in modern plants is >98%.

Key Technical Parameters for Solvent Extraction:

  • Solvent-to-solid ratio: 0.8–1.2:1 by weight.
  • Extraction temperature: 55–60°C for optimal diffusion.
  • Contact time: 60–120 minutes depending on flake thickness.
  • Desolventizer-toaster (DT) conditions: 105–115°C to remove residual solvent from meal (<500 ppm for animal feed).

Advantages: Highest oil yield, cost-effective for large-scale oil mill plants (>100 tons per day), and produces low-fat protein meal for feed.
Disadvantages: High initial equipment cost, fire/explosion risks (hexane is flammable), requires solvent recovery systems, and the crude oil must undergo full refining to remove solvent residues, gums, and free fatty acids (FFA).

3.Combined Method: Pre-Pressing + Solvent Extraction

For oilseeds with medium-to-high oil content (25–35%) like rapeseed, cottonseed, and sunflower, the most economical route is a hybrid line. The seed is first pre-pressed mechanically to extract 60–70% of the oil, reducing the oil content in the pressed cake to 15–18%. This cake is then flaked and subjected to solvent extraction to recover the remaining oil, achieving a combined residual oil of <1.5%.

    • Reduces solvent consumption and energy use compared to direct solvent extraction.
    • Preserves natural oil quality from the pressing fraction.
    • Maximizes total yield for medium-scale oilseed processing operations (50–500 TPD).
